Reviewing 1997 racing performances, Michael Tanner in Pacemaker of December 1997 commented:
"When it came to burning off the opposition, the principal Group 1
exhibition stands to Starborough, whose first 6 furlongs in the St.
Jame's Palace Stakes of 71.60 (gd/gd-fm) is the fastest ever on the Old Mile
and allowed him the luxury of a 27.18 final quarter. Double Trigger's
similar performance in the Goodwood Cup was, if anything, even more
meritorious since he and Michael Roberts had to orchestrate affairs for
twice as far.
They did this to such purpose that Double Trigger's last furlong of 13.19
(gd-fm) was not only faster than the much-touted Daggers Drawn in the same
day's Richmond Stakes but also the fastest of the entire Goodwood
fixture".
