It is very rare that an incredibly talented racehorse can establish himself in his lifetime as a National Hunt sire. Yet the fairy tale is coming true for Double Trigger. He became a firm public favourite during the mid 1990's winning 14 races from 2 to 7 years including the G1 Ascot Gold Cup, and a record 3 G2 Goodwood Cups and three G3 Doncaster Cups, as well as breaking the track record in his 2 year old maiden at Redcar!
As Mark Johnston his trainer commented in his new biography written by Nick Townsend : "The horse was incredibly brave. When he came back in that third Goodwood Cup, Jim McGrath's commentary was actually that Trigger was dropping back. Within a couple of seconds he had picked up the bit and charged on again. He never knew when he was beaten."
After his eight season at stud in 2006 he is now showing that he is transmitting that ability and determination to his National Hunt runners. From his 16 runners from the end of October to the New Year he has had 11 winners and placed horses, an incredible 69%, and 6 individual winners giving him a ratio of winners to runners of nearly 40%. These include the highly rated TWELVE PACES, owned by David Johnson and trained by David Pipe. He won the £40,000 Coors Cumberland Chase at the end of October, his third win to date. In November, DOUBLE DIZZY won at Exeter after a consistent run of 5 2nds, TRIGGERNOMETRY, DOUBLE LAW, LEGAL JOY, and WATER PISTOL were all placed, and in December SILVER PALOMINO won in Ireland, and TRIGGER THE LIGHT, JADES DOUBLE and RADNOR LAD were all winners in England.
DOUBLE TRIGGER's overall figures for a young stallion also compare with the very best for his age. Overall in 2006 he achieved 21% winners to runners, significantly ahead of his contemporaries Kayf Tara at 13% and Silver Patriarch at 13%. Whilst all of these sires have a great National Hunt future, Double Trigger is showing a precocity which is also helping him achieve success on the flat. Already the sire of two year old winners, his flag bearer in 2006 was Linden Lime, a three times winner for DOUBLE TRIGGER's part-owner Dick Moules at Kempton in May, Haydock in August and Chester in September.
DOUBLE TRIGGER stands at John Haydon's East Burrow Farm in Devon. His fee remains at £s;2,500 1st.October and to celebrate his success and to encourage more top mares in 2007 the stud are offering free transport to and from the stud for the 2007 season, contact John Haydon on 01884 860358 for details.
